When the bus does not run

Who can do this: Bus crew Administrator

The bus runs only on school days. At the weekend, outside term time, and on a day the school has declared closed, children cannot be marked onto the bus.

What the crew see

When no child on your bus can travel today, My bus shows a banner, The bus is not running today., with the reason, and the On the bus button cannot be pressed. Your Overview shows the same banner.

The reason tells you whether anything needs doing:

Message What it means
The bus does not run at the weekend. Saturday or Sunday. Nothing to do.
No term dates are set for this school, so the bus is not running. The school has not entered its term dates. The bus will not run until it does. Tell the office.
The school is between terms. The holidays. Expected.
The school is closed — followed by a name, such as Half term A closure the school has added. Expected.

Getting off is never refused. A child already on the bus can always be marked Dropped off, whatever the calendar says.

When only some grades are closed

Term dates and closures can apply to some grades and not others. If one grade is on half term and another is in school, the bus still runs: the children who are in school board as normal, and only the children whose grade is closed are refused.

What the office needs to do

Who can do this: Administrator

  • Keep your term dates current. If your school uses the bus, the bus depends on them. Without any term dates, it does not run at all. See Terms, fee types and amounts.
  • Add closures to the calendar for half terms, public holidays and other days you are shut, for the grades they apply to. See Calendar, events and closures.

On a day the bus does not run, no "run not started" alerts are sent.
